Identity verification for insurers
Verify the policyholder when the policy starts and the beneficiary when the money is paid, with links you can send to people you have never met.
What insurers ask of identity checks
For an insurer the sharp moment is not always the sale. A life policy names beneficiaries who may be strangers to the insurer until a claim arrives, and the payout is the point where the right person has to receive the money. A claim can also be filed by someone other than the policyholder. So the identity work has two ends: the person who buys, and the person who is paid.
- Verify the policyholder remotely when the policy starts.
- Reach beneficiaries and claimants who have never used your service, with a link that works on any phone.
- Verify the beneficiary against a document and a live face at the payout.
- Screen the beneficiary for PEP status before the money is released.
- Keep the evidence with the claim.
The flow
- Policyholder. The applicant completes document, selfie, liveness and face match in one session when the policy starts.
- Invitation. When a claim or a payout is due, your system creates a one-time link for each beneficiary, from 1 to 1,000 at once. The beneficiary can start on a desktop and finish on a phone with a QR code.
- Beneficiary check. The beneficiary photographs an identity document, the selfie is matched to the document portrait, and active liveness confirms a live person.
- PEP and sanctions. International AML screening covers sanctions, PEP with relatives and close associates, and adverse media.
- Decision. Cases that your rules do not settle go to a person in the dashboard, who decides manually. The session log can be exported.
- Payout. Your claims system reads the session status or receives a webhook, and releases the payout when your rule is met.

Regulatory frame
What the European Union's AML Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2024/1624, says about life insurance. The Regulation is forthcoming and applies from 10 July 2027.
- An insurance undertaking is a financial institution under the Regulation insofar as it carries out life or other investment-related assurance activities.
- Article 47 requires due diligence on the beneficiaries of life and other investment-related insurance policies as soon as they are identified or designated: the name of a specifically named beneficiary is recorded, and for a beneficiary designated by characteristics or class the insurer obtains enough information to establish the identity at the time of the payout.
- The verification of the identity of the beneficiaries and, where relevant, their beneficial owners takes place at the time of the payout.
- Article 44 requires reasonable measures to determine whether a beneficiary of a life or other investment-related insurance policy, or the beneficial owner of the beneficiary, is a politically exposed person, no later than at the time of the payout or of the assignment of the policy.
- Under Article 21(1), for life insurance contracts, an obliged entity shall, where necessary as an alternative to terminating the business relationship, refrain from performing transactions for the customer, including payouts to beneficiaries, until the customer due diligence measures are complied with.
