Identity verification for mobility and rentals
Hand over the keys to the person on the driver's licence: capture the licence on a phone, match the face and apply your minimum age.
What mobility and rental services ask of identity checks
A vehicle leaves the lot with whoever has the key, so the check has to establish that the renter is the person on the licence and that the licence is a real document. The renter is usually alone at a car, a scooter dock or a locker, with no counter and no clerk, and the same person comes back many times. The flow therefore has to run on a phone and fit into a booking.
- Capture the driver's licence on the renter's phone. Multi-page documents are accepted.
- Read the date of birth and apply your minimum rental age.
- Match the face on the licence to a live person at the moment of rental.
- Keep blocked drivers out.
The flow
- Booking. Your system creates a session at booking and sends a one-time link, or shows a QR code at the vehicle so that a driver who booked on a desktop can finish on a phone.
- Driver's licence. The renter photographs the driver's licence. Multi-page documents are accepted. The document is read and checked for screen photos, photocopies, printouts, glued photos and edited images.
- Minimum age. The date of birth on the licence is compared with the age window in your scenario, which is configurable from 16 to 100.
- Selfie and active liveness. The selfie is matched to the licence portrait, and the renter moves the face through two ovals to confirm a live person.
- Blocklist. Your own person lists and blocklists are checked, and repeat-user search looks for the same face among earlier verified users.
- Unlock decision. Your fleet system reads the session status or receives a webhook, and your own rule decides whether the vehicle unlocks.
Modules used
- Document verification: driver's licences are among the supported document families.
- Face verification with the age check, and liveness.
- Web SDK and widget: one-time links, QR hand-off and 29 interface languages.
- Blocklists and repeat-user search, described on the face verification page. A returning user is compared with a stored reference face.
- REST API and webhooks to connect the result to the fleet system.
- Retention is a setting you choose per scenario, within the minimum periods and privacy obligations that apply to you, with erasure on request by API, a confirmation webhook and an erasure log.
Regulatory frame
What the European Union's new driving licence Directive says. It is a forthcoming framework that deals with verification and with what the verifier may keep, and most of its measures apply from 26 November 2029. Directive 2006/126/EC is repealed only from the dates given below.
- Recital (6) of Directive (EU) 2025/2205 states that the Directive establishes a legal basis for the storage of an obligatory set of personal data in physical driving licences and in mobile driving licences for the purposes of proving and verifying a person's right to drive and identity.
- The same recital says that the verifier should only be able to retain such data if authorised to do so by Union or national law, and gives the example that a rental company might be authorised to fill in driving licence data in a vehicle rental contract.
- From 26 November 2029, Article 4(7) requires Member States to ensure that the personal data necessary for the verification of the information reported on the physical driving licence are not retained by the verifier, unless such retention is authorised by Union or national law.
