Identity verification for remote casinos and sportsbooks

The costliest moment in a gambling account is a withdrawal that stops for a document nobody asked for. Plan the check around when it happens, not only how.

What remote casinos and sportsbooks ask of identity checks

For a remote casino or a sportsbook the identity check has a clock on it. A player who is checked late is a player who can already have staked money, and a player who is checked in stages is a player whose first withdrawal may stall. The questions that matter are therefore about order: what must be known before the first wager, what the player is told before the first deposit, and what must not be asked for for the first time when the player wants money out.

A second pressure comes from the player's side. Few people read terms before a deposit, and fewer still expect to be asked for a passport when they have won. A flow that asks once, early and plainly, and says why, is easier for the player to follow than one that surprises, and it leaves the compliance team a clean record: one session, one set of documents and one decision, instead of a trail of partial requests spread over weeks.

  • Verify the player before the first wager is accepted.
  • Ask early for what the cashier can reasonably be expected to need later, so that a withdrawal meets fewer avoidable requests.
  • Tell the player which documents may be needed before money goes in.
  • Keep the identity data accurate over time.

The flow

  1. Before the deposit. Your cashier tells the player which documents may be needed and how they are given. This text is yours, and the platform does not write it.
  2. Registration data. The questionnaire collects name, birth date, contacts and the custom fields you need, such as the address, before the KYC starts.
  3. Document. The player photographs a passport, national ID card, driver's licence or residence permit. The document is read and checked for fraud. A utility bill, bank statement or lease can be added to the same session as an extra document.
  4. Same person. The selfie is matched to the document portrait and active liveness confirms a live person.
  5. Gate. Your platform reads the session status or receives a webhook, and its own rule decides whether the account is opened for play.
  6. Screening. When the scenario includes it, AML screening covers sanctions, PEP with relatives and close associates, and adverse media.
  7. Withdrawal. Asking early reduces the requests that could have been made earlier, which the condition does not allow as a condition of withdrawal. Information that the operator must obtain at that time because of another legal obligation can still be requested, and cases that need a person are decided in the dashboard.
  8. Later. When the player returns, the returning user is compared with a stored reference face.

Where this differs from the gaming page

The gaming page is about who the player is: the minimum age, the person on the document, people on your exclusion list. This page is about when. It treats the check as something that is finished before play and made as complete as can reasonably be done, so that a withdrawal meets fewer new requests. The same steps run, but the order and the wording of the cashier change.

Regulatory frame

One primary text: Condition 17.1.1, customer identity verification, in the Licence conditions and codes of practice of the Gambling Commission. The Commission states that the condition applies to all remote licences, with listed exceptions. The statements below keep that limit.

  • Licensees must obtain and verify information in order to establish the identity of a customer before that customer is permitted to gamble, and the information must include, but is not restricted to, the customer's name, address and date of birth.
  • A request made by a customer to withdraw funds from their account must not result in a requirement for additional information to be supplied as a condition of withdrawal if the licensee could have reasonably requested that information earlier, although this does not prevent a licensee from seeking information that it must obtain at that time due to any other legal obligation.
  • Before permitting a customer to deposit funds, licensees should inform customers what types of identity documents or other information the licensee may need, the circumstances in which such information might be required, and the form and manner in which it should be provided.
  • Licensees must take reasonable steps to ensure that the information they hold on a customer's identity remains accurate.
